5 Blood Markers I Always Check When Symptoms Are Chronic

Hi Reader,

Most people who’ve done blood work believe they’ve already “checked everything.”

A few standard markers, a quick glance at the reference range, and if nothing is flagged — they’re told everything looks fine.

And yet, the symptoms remain.

Energy isn’t consistent.
Digestion isn’t stable.

Hormones aren’t balanced.

Things feel slightly off — but never enough to be taken seriously.

The gap here is a lack of testing and a lack of interpretation.

Because most essential markers are never recommended (because conventional medicine just wants to diagnose and treat) and blood reports are read in a very binary way:

Either something is wrong. Or it isn’t.

But physiology doesn’t work like that.

Long before something becomes a diagnosis, the body starts adapting. Compensating. Shifting.

And those shifts are often already visible in blood work — just not in the way it’s typically being looked at.

This is why I don’t look at blood markers as “normal” or “abnormal.”

I look at them as signals.

Signals of:

  • how the body is functioning
  • where it is under strain
  • and what it’s trying to compensate for

In my practice, every client goes through a comprehensive functional blood chemistry analysis — where we assess 75+ markers, not in isolation, but in patterns.

Because when you start connecting markers instead of viewing them individually, you begin to see a very different picture. And interestingly, some of the most useful insights don’t come from obscure tests.

They come from markers that are either:

  • not tested routinely
  • or tested, but not interpreted deeply

If you’ve been dealing with ongoing symptoms, these are a few I almost always want to see (apart from some routine blood work) — not as standalone answers, but as part of a bigger pattern.

1. Fasting Insulin

Most people check blood sugar/glucose and stop there.

But insulin tells you how much effort your body is putting in to keep that sugar “normal.”

You can have completely normal glucose levels — while insulin is quietly elevated for years.

That underlying strain influences energy, cravings, inflammation, and hormone balance long before anything shows up on a standard report.

2. Full Thyroid Panel

Being told your thyroid is “normal” based on TSH alone is one of the most common reasons people stay confused.

Because TSH doesn’t tell you how well thyroid hormones are actually being produced, converted, or used.

When you look deeper, you often find that the system is not dysfunctional enough to be diagnosed — but not optimal enough to feel good either.

That’s why you always have to test free thyroid hormone levels and thyroid antibodies too.

3. Homocysteine

This is one of the most overlooked markers — and one of the most telling.

It reflects how well your body is managing processes like methylation and detoxification.

When elevated, it’s often a sign that the system is under biochemical stress — even if everything else looks “fine.”

Over time, this can influence energy, cognitive function, and inflammation in ways that are rarely traced back to it.

This marker also plays a key role in determining which kind of B vitamins your body needs and will do well with at the given time.

4. Full Iron Panel

Iron is another area where partial testing creates incomplete conclusions.

Looking at iron or ferritin alone doesn’t tell you how iron is being transported, stored, or utilised.

So you’ll often see people supplementing iron without understanding whether the issue is actually absorption, inflammation, or utilisation.

And that’s where things start to get more confusing instead of clearer. Always ask for a full iron panel.

5. Vitamin B12 & Vitamin D

These are commonly tested, but the ranges used are so wide that they often miss functional deficiencies.

So someone can be told they’re “normal” — while still experiencing fatigue, low mood, poor recovery, or brain fog.

The number may be in range as per the standard lab ranges. But the function isn’t optimal.

I’m sure Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D are two markers you would have definitely gotten tested in the past year.

Feel free to send them across to me and I will tell you whether they are functionally optimal or not!

Now, none of these markers, on their own, explain everything.

But when you look at them together — and in the context of your symptoms — they start to form a pattern.

And that pattern is often where the real insight lies.

This is also why blood work, on its own, is not enough.

It doesn’t replace deeper functional testing — especially when we need to understand gut health, microbial patterns, hidden infections, hormone production and metabolism or immune activity in detail.

But it is one of the most accessible and underutilised entry points we have.

And when interpreted properly, it can be a goldmine.

If you’d like help understanding your blood work — what to test, how to interpret it, and how it connects to your symptoms — I do offer a standalone Functional Blood Chemistry Analysis, where we go through your markers in depth and identify key patterns.

It’s also where most people, for the first time, feel like their reports actually make sense.

Issue #10, 27 May 2026 Everything you need to know about the GI-MAP comprehensive stool test Hi Reader, The GI-MAP is one of the most advanced functional stool tests currently available — and in chronic health cases, it can completely change the quality of information we have about the gut. Not because it magically diagnoses everything. But because it gives us measurable data about an area of health that is otherwise often approached through assumptions, symptom patterns, or trial-and-error...

Issue #9, 13 May 2026 Healthy Habits Stop Working When the Body Loses Resilience Hi Reader, One of the most confusing experiences for people dealing with chronic symptoms is watching “healthy habits” slowly stop working. The clean eating that once helped now barely moves the needle. Exercise leaves you more exhausted than energised. Fasting worsens cravings, anxiety, sleep, or fatigue. Supplements that were once supportive suddenly start causing bloating, headaches, reflux, or strange...

Issue #7, 8 Apr 2026 There is no single root cause - and that’s exactly the problem Hi Reader, “Find the root cause.” It’s one of the most widely accepted and chased after ideas in health right now. And it sounds right — if you can identify the cause, you can fix the problem. Right? But there is no single root cause. And chasing one is exactly why most people stay stuck. Let me tell you. In all the clients I’ve run hundreds of labs on, there hasn’t been a single one who had just one root...
